"Cauchi" as a surname clearly has its base on the Islands of Malta and Gozo.  The "Cauchy" French spelling of the name is firmly based in France.   Historians and genealogists trace the name back through 600 to 1,000 years in those regions, also including Italy.  This simple study is a snapshot of 2005-06 - where the Cauchi households are located now.

TOTALS?  The total of all households tallied on this page are approximately 1,775 "Cauchi" and 825 "Cauchy" covering 22 countries.  Please see the cautions and disclaimer under other countries, below.

The Cauchi surname is relatively uncommon in the United States.  The following is a state geographic listing of the 127 Cauchi names as listed in the U.S. telephone directories, courtesy of whitepages.com and D|ex.  Families are concentrated in only four states: 37 in New York, 33 in Michigan, 27 in California and 19 in Florida, .  Another 17 Cauchi families are scattered among eight states, which leaves 38 states with no Cauchi listed.  In addition, there are 52 "Cauchy" families (the French spelling) listed in seven states.

This U.S. list is complete as of March 2007, but only includes individuals choosing to be included in published phone directories, and has no information on family size.  Where identified, exact duplicate names & addresses are counted only once.  With luck, some of the underlined linked totals provide the names, cities and phone numbers from the public D|ex telephone lists.

The islands of Malta remain the historical and current center for Cauchi names and families, with 850 plus directory listings. The largest percentage by population are concentrated on Gozo, the ancestral birthplace of many Cauchi's.  Modern internet technology has made it easy to identify both areas and individuals, so for comparison, here are some "Cauchi" name counts from Gozo and the main island of Malta.

The following are some interesting, major examples of Cauchi locations and migration to additional nations.  The listings vary in terms of completeness and accuracy, due to the widely differing policies used by private and national telephone companies.  Some appear quite complete and updated regularly (for example, Malta, Australia, Canada, France).  Others are served by multiple companies that may not cooperate on listings, or maintain lists only locally, making it far more difficult to count or link for the entire country (for example Argentina, Germany, Greece).  Many other large countries do not have residential listings online (for example Brazil, China, India, Russia) or use alphabets not readily searchable from the U.S. or Europe.
